Why Cambridge Raw Organic Chocolate is good for you

Can chocolate really be good for you? It seems like the very idea itself is too good to be true but the ingredients used in our chocolate are all full of nutritional compounds (components of food that benefit health) and three of the ingredients are classified as superfoods. A superfood has properties that promote health by reducing the risk of disease as well as having a positive effect on physical and mental well-being.
Importantly, there are no processed or man-made ingredients in our chocolate. It is all completely natural.

Have a look at the ingredients and you’ll see why eating our chocolate will make you feel good.

Raw Organic Cacao Powder

Cacao Powder is the raw state of chocolate. It has over 300 nutritional compounds and is one of the richest sources of antioxidants of any food on the planet. Antioxidants not only block the development of chemicals in the body known as free radicals that can damage cells and cause cancer but they also help to cleanse arteries thereby reducing the risk of heart disease and lowering blood pressure. And if that wasn’t impressive, enough raw chocolate increases serotonin, a chemical produced by the body that makes us feel good.

Raw chocolate is also packed with magnesium and chromium. Magnesium relaxes the muscles, heart and cardiovascular system as well as improving bowel movement, and chromium boosts production of insulin, a hormone critical to metabolism.

Cacao was original consumed as a drink by the Aztec tribes of Central Mexico. They believed it to have divine properties and it was even used as currency, such was its value.

Raw Organic Cacao Butter

Cacao butter comes from the cacao bean and contains oleic acid, a healthy mono-saturated fat, known to reduce cholesterol and ease arthritis. It also contains a chemical called Pentamer that is believed to avert the chances of cancer. And, like Cacao powder, it contains the mood enhancer, serotonin.

Organic Coconut Oil

Coconut Oil has a unique combination of easily absorbed fatty acids that not only provide a quick source of energy but have been linked with improvements to liver and pancreas function, and the digestive system. Coconut oil has also been used to treat brain disorders such as epilepsy and Alzheimer’s.

Unsurprisingly, it’s another of our ingredients that’s classed as a superfood.

Organic Rice Malt Syrup

Rice malt syrup is made from fermented cooked rice and is a blend of complex carbohydrates, and the natural sugars, maltose and glucose. Because it’s a slow releasing sweetener – providing energy over a prolonged period of time – it’s not as damaging to the liver as pure glucose and doesn’t spike blood levels in the same way as white sugar. Rice malt syrup also contains niacin and vitamin B-6, both of which are good for hair, nails and mental health.

Organic Maple Syrup

Maple syrup is the boiled down sap of the sugar maple tree. It’s packed full of antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds that help with diseases such as diabetes, cancer, osteoporosis and Alzheimer’s. It also helps with digestive issues such as bloating and flatulence and is an excellent source of manganese which keeps bones strong and helps repair damage to muscles and cells. It also contains zinc, iron, calcium and potassium.

Organic Orange Zest

Oranges are loaded with vitamin C, we all know that. What you may not know is that they are also a great source of fibre and can play a role in controlling blood sugar and insulin levels. Orange zest contains hesperidin and pectin. Hesperidin helps to lower cholesterol and has anti-inflammatory benefits while pectin acts as a natural appetite suppressant and promotes the production of healthy bacteria in the intestines.

Organic Vanilla Bean Powder

Vanilla beans are the seed pod of the Vanilla vine. Vanilla has anti-inflammatory properties and can be used for reducing fever and relieving pain. It also aids digestion, and prevents constipation and diarrhoea.

Organic Hazelnuts

Hazelnuts are rich in unsaturated fats and contain magnesium and the vitamins B1, B2, B3, B5, B6 and B9. The B vitamins not only help ease stress and anxiety but are crucial in helping break down proteins, fats and carbohydrates as part of the digestive process, thereby providing us with the energy we need to function. The vitamin E in hazelnuts has been linked to a reduction in cancer. And hazelnuts are yet another of our ingredients that trigger that feel-good hormone, serotonin.

Organic Cashews

Cashew nuts are packed with soluble dietary fibre, vitamins, minerals and numerous health-promoting phyto-chemicals (compounds found in plants used to treat illness). They are rich in ‘heart friendly’ monounsaturated-fatty acids like oleic and palmitoleic acids and contain manganese, potassium, iron and zinc.

Organic Coconut

Coconuts are rich in fibre and contain almost too many vitamins and minerals to mention but include vitamins C, E, B1, B3 and B5, iron, calcium and phosphorus. They have been shown to have a positive effect on both the metabolism and the immune system.

Sea Salt

Sea salt, as the name suggests, is salt obtained naturally from the sea. It has beneficial effects on the immune system, helps speed up digestion and aids in the maintenance of proper sugar levels in the body. It contains potassium, good for preventing muscle pain and has also been shown to be effective in treating depression.

Organic Raisins

Raisins are dried grapes and, like all dried fruit, they are full of the natural sugars, fructose and glucose. They are good for boosting energy and help the body absorb minerals and proteins in other foods. Like some of our other ingredients they are antioxidants.

How it all began…

A few years ago, while I was attending a fitness boot camp, my trainer Amber Brammah (owner and founder of Lovefit Ltd) began offering detox programmes for her clients. I took her up on the offer and, right from the start, found the clean eating plan had numerous and immediate benefits for me. I felt better, I lost weight, and I had more energy. The only thing stopping it from being even more beneficial to me was my weakness for sugar, particularly chocolate.

It was then that I decided enough was enough of being a chocaholic. I had to find a healthier alternative, a way of enjoying chocolate but not consuming all the refined sugar, preservatives and additives that go with it. I wanted something that tasted great but that was good for me too. Was it possible?

I researched and read about the amazing qualities of raw cacao powder. Convinced that this was the key, I began experimenting – mixing the cacao powder with other raw and organic ingredients – to see if I could find the perfect recipe for healthier chocolate. Inevitably there were a number of disasters (and tears!) but finally I came up with a recipe for chocolate that was delicious, contained no refined sugar or dairy products, was gluten-free and wheat-free, and vegan to boot.

That recipe is now the one I use as the base for all my chocolates. There is no cooking at all involved in my chocolate and all the ingredients are organic.

I hope you enjoy eating them as much as I enjoy making them!

My aim is to share the amazing health benefits of my unique recipe for raw chocolate and I work with a number of ethical and conscious health food distributers in the UK, as listed below.
